Julie McEnerny has been Artist in Residence at the Tanks and Botanic Gardens since mid May, working on the beginnings of a folegium, recording the plants of the Cairns Botanic Gardens. Julie has created a series of works relating to the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden, incorporating etchings, drawings and paintings whist exploring the nature of the plants through 3-dimensional piecies.
The Residency has given Julie access to Traditional Owner's knowledge, Botanic Garden's staff and the Friends of Flecker Garden's library collection, allowing her to gather accurate information. Her work has taken botanica illustration along the road of artistic interpretation in an effort to achieve the Garden's collection in a unique and interesting way.
The small exhibition is a culmination of her residency, but only the beginning of an enormous endeavour, considering the size and diversity of Cairns Botanic Gardens.

Australia’s most in-demand locals - Goodwill and Tommy Trash are going on the road to bring the swag of super-exclusive first usage tracks and remixes from the compilation to the Gilligans dancefloor!
Goodwill: His passion and spunky flair for both his music and life in general has made him a very valuable member of Ministry of Sound's family as he's not only one of Sydney’s finest DJs but one of Australia’s.
Goodwill has old-school experience, but with new-school musical flavours and is, not to mention, also one of the highest selling Australian artist and producer in dance - a rare creature who is naturally always in demand. And we would say that even if we weren't completely biased.
Tommy Trash: Producer/DJ Thomas Olsen a.k.a Tommy Trash is fast making his way to being one of the biggest names in Australian dance music.
Tommy burst onto the scene in 2006 with his debut single ‘Slide’ featuring on the 2007 Ministry of Sound Annual and Electro House Sessions (an album which he mixed along with The Stafford Brothers). Tommy followed this up a year later with his main room monster ‘Amsterdam 01’ which features on the Ministry of Sound 2008 Annual, and the b-side to this ‘Amsterdam 02’ featuring on Ministry of Sound Electro House Sessions 2.
Tommy has developed a reputation as a formidable producer, with his original productions and collaborations regularly featuring in the ARIA charts and constantly shaking up the top 5 spots.
Tommy has remixed the likes of Tom Novy, Green Velvet, Grafton Primary, Armand Van Helden and has even been commissioned to remix The Veronicas. Tommy has also had success through his collaborations with fellow Sydney Dj/Producer Goodwill (‘It’s A Swede Thing’ featured on Ministry of Sound’s Electro House Sessions and Sessions Four) and Tom Piper (‘Fk To The Bass which features on Ministry of Sound Sessions Four).

Based on a real life incident involving two boys who throw stones from a freeway overpass and kill a driver, The Stones is an excellent example of Australian contemporary documentary drama.
The play follows the two boys’ journey in the lead up to the event and then their arrest and subsequent charge of manslaughter. In a production free from judgement and lectures on morality, The Stones uses a range of conventions such as physical theatre and multiple role playing.
The Stones has received a NSW Frater Award (1998), a Victorian Arts Council Award (1999), a DeutchTheater award for Best New Work (2002), and the Critics Choice Award in Budapest, Hungary (2004).

Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book has been popular amongst many generations of children, discussing themes that are as relevant today as they were when they were written. The Jungle Book tells the story of a young human baby, Mowgli, found in the wilderness by a family of wolves and raised as one of their own. He learns over time the rules or 'Laws' of the jungle, instructed by his animal mentors including the wise black panther, Bagheera, and Baloo the sleepy bear. Both of these friendly beasts contribute to the child's education. HIT Productions will bring to life The Jungle Book, with Mowgli now in his early twenties, returning to the jungle to see Baloo and Bagheera. Narrated by Baloo, the songs reflect Mowgli's time growing up in the jungle. Covering an eclectic range of styles from contemporary ballad to funk and bongo beat, The Jungle Book songs include Bearstar, Jungle Law, Rumble in the Jungle, Baagheera's Song and many more. A bright, colourful entertaining experience for the entire family.

Wendy Matthews has a reputation as an artist par excellence with a sublime, expressive voice that never fails to move those who hear it.
Both acoustically and physically, Wendy Matthews moves with an enviable minimalism. Her music is an unhurried journey of clean melodies, infectious energy and simple grace. In an age when grunge is thought to be hip and cynicism an attribute, Wendy has proven that commitment to beauty is still not only valid but applauded by the public ear. This is exemplified by the reality that Wendy's music is now in more than 1 million homes in Australia - all her albums to date have multi-platinum status. Wendy has an immense talent and capacity to capture and define a diverse range of styles in her music. She takes songs from every genre and makes them her own, from jazz to blues, from rock to gospel, from soul to outright infectious pop and then, of course, there are the beautiful ballads.
Wendy is adept at reaching both frenetic youth and mature audiences alike. If older ears are captured by her soul and unfazed class, a more cynical youth is convinced by her disarming ease of delivery, wooed by a voice of stunning emotive capacity yet void of sentimentality. This outstanding capability has ensured the strength of her following - not only with the public but also the music industry. To date Wendy has won seven ARIAS - the all time record. Simply put, Wendy Matthews has a reputation for having one of the finest voices ever. As Midnight Oil frontman, Peter Garrett, says when he eloquently describes her abilities: "Wendy's voice is to the vocal chords what the Daintree is to the wilderness". Such observations point to Wendy's uncanny ability to choose great songs and interpret them with an individual polish hitherto unknown in this country.
Wendy has performed at some of the most prestigious musical events. From the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, live TV specials in Asia, MIDEM in Cannes, to performing in front of over 40,000 people on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. Her tours play to full houses in both regional and capital city theatres. Born in Montreal Canada, Wendy joined her first band and left home as a teenager, busking her way across the USA to Los Angeles where she met Glenn Shorrock who invited her to tour with him in Australia in 1982. Wendy immediately became an in-demand session singer, appearing on many commercial jingles and backing vocals for the likes of The Models "Out of Mind Out of Sight" and became a semi-permanent member of the band. She also sang on albums by Jimmy Barnes, Tim Finn, Richard Clapton and Icehouse.
In 1987, Wendy collaborated with Kate Ceberano on the ABC-TV soundtrack for the series ‘Stringer'. ‘You've Always Got the Blues' was released the next year reaching the Top 5 national charts. She then contributed to the Rockmelons and Peter Blakeley's respective albums. She helped form Absent Friends and sang on the number one hit "I Don't Wanna Be With Nobody But You" and the album "Here's Looking Up Your Address". After touring with Absent Friends, Wendy went into the studio to record her solo debut. The album "Émigré" (Double Platinum) spawned the hits "Token Angels", "Lets Kiss" and "Woman's Gotta Have It" and earned Wendy the Best Female Artist and Best Debut Single (for ‘Token Angels') at the 1990 ARIA Awards. Wendy was also voted Best Female Singer in the 1990 Rolling Stone Reader's Poll. This was followed up by the Triple Platinum album "Lily" with the mega hit " "The Day You Went Away" plus "If Only I Could" and Friday's Child", In 1992 Wendy picked up the ARIA for Best Female Artist and Best Single and again in 1993 Best Female Artist. "The Day You Went Away" was the ‘highest selling single' of 1993 and the ‘single of the year'.
Wendy then followed up with another two studio albums "The Witness Tree" and "Ghosts" including the hits "Love Will Keep Me Alive", "Standing Strong", "Then I Walked away". In 1999 to cap off an already outstanding career, Wendy released her first "Best Of....Stepping Stones" which not only included her former hits but also "Nobody But You" the massive hit from Absent Friends. Not resting on her laurels, in 2001 Wendy released "Beautiful View" featuring the hauntingly beautiful title track and club favorite "Like the Sun".
2004 saw the release of the mixed-up, chilled-out "Café Naturale" an eclectic suite of songs which immediately evoke a sense of familiarity. The Tropfest winning film "Lamb" by Emma Freeman features as the highly acclaimed video clip to the popular "All I Need". There are very few artists in Australia that can cite Wendy's credentials, seven arias, a massive 19 singles, 7 top selling albums and most of all the love of her fans. Wendy has recently completed her first independent record on her own "Barking Bear" record label. "She" is a personal collection of favorite songs by women who have inspired her over the years. As she puts it "songs that have made the singer, women who have made the woman". Recorded live in a studio room together over three days with her long standing band and a few specialty players, Matthews considers it a journey through her formative years, with songs by Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, EmmyLou Harris and Chrissie Hynde and fellow native Canadians Joni Mitchell, Buffy St Marie and Jane Siberry to name a few. "Fallen Angels" is the first song to radio with the album "She" due for release in January 2009.
When she's not writing, recording or touring extensively, Wendy and her beloved dog Bear, enjoy the beauty of the Northern NSW coast where she is building a hand crafted home.

As one of the most well respected songwriters in Australian music history, Don Walker needs no introduction. After presenting songwriting workshops at Tanks Arts Centre last year, the main songwriter of iconic rock band Cold Chisel returns to perform his eclectic mix of classic and award-winning songs.
During the years of Cold Chisel's fame in the 1970s and early 1980s, Don penned hits such as 'Saturday Night', 'Cheap Wine', 'Standing on the Outside' and the anthemic classic 'Khe Sahn'. Since Chisel officially called it quits in 1983, he's gone on to carve himself a prolific musical career. He's written and released tracks under different guises, most notably the albums 'Unlimited Address' and 'Ruby' under the band 'Catfish' with guitarist Peter Walker and harmonica player David Blight. He also joined his former Chisel band mates when the band reformed in 1998 to release their first studio album in 15 years 'The Last Wave of Summer'.
In 1993 he teamed up with other iconic Aussie musicians Tex Perkins and Charlie Owen releasing an album as Tex, Don & Charlie called 'Sad But True'. This album featured songs written while Don was in Nashville, and spawned a successful tour, and consequent live album 'Monday Morning Coming Down'. Years later in 2005 they released another album, 'All Is Forgiven', one that was nominated for the inaugural Australian Music Prize.
It was only in 1995 that Don released his first solo album, 'We're All Gonna Die', a record that was acclaimed by reviewers as 'possibly the best Australian album released in years'. His second solo album, 'Cutting Back' was released in 2006. Always an amazing writer, Don recently released his first book 'Shots' in March this year.

The Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) competition is coming to Cairns!
Date: Saturday 18th July at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bull Bar & Grill located at 94 Lake St, Cairns, QLD, 4870
How to register: Bands simply need to register for the upcoming local GBOB Heat through www.gbob.com.
Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) has officially begun for 2009! The opening Heat was held in Newcastle on 13th June where some top quality bands really impressed the local crowd. Bands in Cairns will now get their shot at the US$100,000 prize money when the Heat runs on 18th July. Age is no boundary as the Bull Bar has agreed to host an all ages event!
The band that succeeds in the Cairns Heat will automatically win a spot in the National Final in Sydney. And if the judges give them the nod here, they’ll be on a plane to London in December with accommodation and flights paid! In London, the winners will challenge bands from 36 different countries for the Grand Prize.
One of the local bands that have registered for this upcoming Heat is the alternative rock band, August Redemption. Luke, Rhythm Guitarist for August Redemption, has been playing music for the past eight years. He says the band’s musical influences range from Metallica, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Their debut album “Liquid Courage” was released last year. They are expected to release a new EP later this year.
In November last year, Aussie rock band, “Powerage” travelled to London as part of the Global Battle of the Bands Challenge. The boys had the opportunity to represent our nation, and did us proud by coming second out of 36 competing bands! This year we’re hoping to go one better and bring the major prize of US$100,000 cash onto Australian soil.
There are some other great prizes on offer, including FujiFilm Z33WP Digital Cameras, Converse Shoes and accommodation at YHA at the National Final in Sydney.
For bands that want to be part of the world’s biggest and best band comp, register at www.gbob.com. Direct any questions towards Ryan from A Red Letter Day (Event Management) on burgessventures1@bigpond.com, or through www.myspace.com/gbobaustralia.
Although an accomplished guitar player, Steve's emphasis is the vocal performance, ensuring the song is sung and the sentiment is carried. From the jazz-swing standard ‘All of me’ to Coldplay’s ‘Yellow,’ the set list will have something for everyone.

Celebration, festivities and joy. They're all here as two men come to Padua in pursuit of learning and love. The first, Lucentio, fixes his gaze on Bianca, the sweet and gentle daughter of the merchant Baptista. The second, Petruchio, hears of Bianca's wanton and wild sister, Kate, and vows to tame her and teach her to be an agreeable wife. All will be married; all will be well.
Or so it would seem.
Directed by award-winning director Marion Potts and featuring an all-female cast, this new production of one of Shakespeare's most controversial comedies transcends expectation and preconception, taking the politics of marriage to ludicrous new heights. Vibrant, energetic and packed with female punch, The Taming Of The Shrew is the perfect night out for anyone who has ever fallen in love and managed to survive it.
Rusty's Markets have been running for more than 30 years, developed from a humble display of 6 stall holders to one of the largest, most successfull and best known markets in Australia. The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. But although the market is widely known for its quality food products, you will also find jewellery, clothing, gem stones, organic personal care products, leatherwear, medicinal herbs and spices, second hand goods and much more.
On Sundays the market becomes 'Rusty's Bazaar' and the range of bric-a-brac and arts and crafts is even greater.
Rusty's Markets were named after the late Emrys 'Rusty' Rees, who was responsible for the development of the market into the superb event that it is nowadays. Save some of your time to enjoy a shopping experience in a carnival like environment.
The Herberton Markets offer good quality fruit and vegetables, home made items, home cooked cakes and jams, leatherwork and unusual and rare plants. The markets are held every third Sunday of the month, between 7:30am and 12:00pm in the Wondecla Showgrounds, located four kilometres south of Herberton. The Herberton Markets are smalls compared to others, only around 40 stalls,
The Pier Markets, also known as the 'Mud Markets' have an interesting selection of bits and pieces, crafts and arts and live entertainment. They are a good place to hunt down authentic local souveniers and fresh produce directly from the farmers. Every Saturday and Sunday, visit the Pier Marketplace Mall, next to the Marlin Marina and treat yourself with the excellent range of goods on offer for the whole family. And kids will surely enjoy the free face painting and balloons. Everything in an indoor fully air-conditioned space.
Since 1998, when they were first held, Smithfield Markets have gained a good reputation for their quality and range, having over 100 stalls each month selling their products. All the market stalls are located in a comfortable air-conditioned centre and are one of the largest and most popular markets in the region.
The Cotters Market by the Sea, in Port Douglas, are held every Sunday. The market, established more than 20 years ago, provides a wide selection of locally made goods, including home made crafts, clothing, good quality jewellery, clothes and artifacts, including boats and other rarities. Visit the markets from 8:00am to 1:30pm and don't miss an opportunity to meet the local community of free traders, artists and farmers or find that something special you have been looking for. The market is located in beautiful and scenic Anzac Park, from where you can enjoy not only shopping but also a stunning coastline. The markets have become a bit touristy, but the Port Douglas markets are the largest market in the region and one of the best.

You can choose when to visit the Kuranda Markets, also known as the 'Original Markets' as they happen every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. For over 21 years, local craftmen have been displaying from locally grown produce to beautifully handcrafted souvenirs, including unique oil paintings and prints of the region. But there is much more to this market. Wandering around the huge amount of stalls you can find emu oil, jewellery, aboriginal artefacts, hand made clothing and a vast variety of home made food. If you fall in love with any of the souvenirs and want to take it home but you think it is too big to be allowed on a plane, do not panic; the stallholders will ship it home for you. The markets are located at 5 Therwine Street, Kuranda.

Backsliders are bringing the blues back to Tanks Arts Centre. The beloved Aussie band, featuring the legendary Dom Turner – a specialist in ‘bottle neck slide guitar’ – and Rob Hirst - of Midnight Oil & Ghostwriters fame – have been dubbed as pioneers of their own music genre, ‘delta-blues wall of sound’. These guys have been writing, recording and performing acoustic-based blues for 20 years, even before ‘blues and roots’ became a catch-phrase.
Rob and Dom first teamed up when Dom guested on the Ghostwriters’ album ‘Second Skin’ in the 1990s. Rob joined Dom in the band in 2000 when the two become something of a songwriting team. Joining them in the current line-up of the band is two of Australia’s most innovative and dynamic harmonica players, the legendary Brod Smith (Dingoes) and ARIA award winning harmonica genius Ian Collard .
The two blues-harp dynamos play alternative gigs, each blazing his own trail to the raw energy of the Blacksliders’ sound. It’s a furious ride, with Dom and Rob doing their thing, setting the grooves and taking no prisoners, and Ian and Brod – you never know who you will get – firing up the amps to fuel the maelstrom.
Returning to Tanks Arts Centre for another special one-off performance, Backsliders bring with them a wealth of musical experience spanning over 20 years. They’ve performed on national and international bills alongside names such as Peter Green, Junior Wells and Little Charlie and the Nightcats to name a few. In 2007 Backsliders released their most recent album ‘Left Field Holler’, an eclectic mix of hard-hitting, frenetic new blues anthems mixed with poignant ballads, again taking the band to new limits.
