The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. But although the market is widely known for its quality food products, you will also find jewellery, clothing, gem stones, organic personal care products, leatherwear, medicinal herbs and spices, second hand goods and much more.

After a splendid and scintillating performance of PS I LOVE YOU with a standing ovation from the audience on the 4th of July, Karnak Playhouse is preparing for the coming of OzOpera's magic production of MADAME BUTTERFLY on the first of August.
We have themed the evening with a Japanese flavour, lighting up the lake with
lanterns and ....... What makes a visit to Karnak Playhouse such an unforgettable experience is that not only can you watch and listen to world class performers at the height of their profession in a glorious rainforest setting, while the moon rises and stars glitter in the sky as well as onstage, but you can eat and drink, park the car and not have to worry about being fined or towed away.
We are also serving a box of 7 different japanese goodies and saki will be available.
It will be a night to savour and remember.
Sadly, there will be no more inhouse productions at the theatre this year though
anyone may hire the venue for functions etc. The reasons are threefold.
Firstly, in the current economic climate, spending money on the theatre is not top of the list of priorities.
Secondly, I am embarking on a world tour of a one woman play called WOMAN BEFORE A GLASS, and must have time to learn my lines, and thirdly, (hopefully) I wish to strengthen and upgrade the amphitheatre so that continuous maintenance will be less necessary and expensive.
So.......Keep watching this space, because I am planning great things for the future!

Coinciding with National Tree Day, Council is inviting the community to come to a tree planting day and free sausage sizzle at Cattana Wetlands on Sunday 2 August at 9am.
Major work has been underway to rehabilitate the site, including the construction of an access road, car park and toilets, picnic shelters, walking tracks and bird hide to create a nature-based recreation park for future generations to enjoy.
Around 10,000 trees have already been planted and Council aims to get another 2,000 trees planted on this day, before the park is officially opened to the public later in the year.

In 2009, the Marine Talks will feature internationally renowned Oceanographer, Dr Sylvia Earle, most notable for her extensive work with National Geographic. Ann Rickard, the author of "Ooh La La! A French Romp" is an absolute hoot. Her book is a laugh from start to finish as she tells the story of taking ten Australian tourists to the South of France to a Villa where they stayed for two weeks eating fine French food prepared by numerous chefs - and drinking buckets of wine.
In her newsletter Ann writes:
"76 baguettes, 20 glasses of beaujolais soup, 12 kilos of brie, 27 frogs' legs, 15 kilos of Roquefort cheese, 4 fried zucchini flowers, 1kg rabbit, 12 bottles of red wine, 96 Greek salads, 1 kg saucisson (studded with macademia nuts), 1 tonne calamari, 310 litres of pink wine, one quarter of a zucchini, 1 floret of broccoli, 796 peanuts, 583 olives, 50 beroccas, no fruit.
"Hello my dear friends...that's just a tiny example of what I have consumed over the past few weeks in Greece and France, and yes, I am deeply ashamed, and yes, sadly, truthfully, unavoidably...I am officially fat!"

For over 21 years, local craftmen have been displaying from locally grown produce to beautifully handcrafted souvenirs, including unique oil paintings and prints of the region. But there is much more to this market. Wandering around the huge amount of stalls you can find emu oil, jewellery, aboriginal artefacts, hand made clothing and a vast variety of home made food. If you fall in love with any of the souvenirs and want to take it home but you think it is too big to be allowed on a plane, do not panic; the stallholders will ship it home for you. The winning band will open the timeOUT concert at Fogarty Park on Saturday, August 29 featuring three hot acts – Hilltop Hoods, Grinspoon and The Fumes.
The battle comp will run over four weeks, with heats held over three Sundays followed by the final on Friday, August 7 @ Gilligan’s.

This latest exhibition by Helen Hume is inspired by her four years travelling throughout the magical landscape known as the Australian Outback. Hume’s travels provided the perfect opportunity to observe and deconstruct the landscape, creating an awareness of the tremendous areas of space on the horizon that opposes the intricate forms at ground level. In Heaven Kissing, Hume has experimented with differing perspectives, distorting imagery from photographs and sketches, helping them work in unison with one another. Her works aim to take on a wide aerial view while highlighting pockets of detail by introducing human and animal relationship to the land.
Each work encapsulates a melee of splashes and strokes that are built upon with glazing techniques. The two-dimensional works are complemented with a selection of sculptural forms.
This exhibition is a tribute to Hume’s extensive activity within the arts. Helen’s active career since 1978 spans the professions of artist, arts worker and art educator, with group and solo exhibitions throughout Queensland and New South Wales and an international show in Jamaica. Helen has since retired from teaching, enabling her to become a full-time practicing artist and freeing her to ponder and explore the unique Australian landscape.

The sugar township of Gordonvale, with a population of approximately 5,000 residents is located just 26kms south of Cairns nestled at the base of Walsh’s Pyramid. The community of Gordonvale is proudly acquiring a reputation for organising and presenting one of the best sporting events to be staged in this region – The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair.
Saturday 15th 2009 sees the 50th Anniversary of The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair take place in Norman Park, Gordonvale. Many other sporting events take place on this day such as a 5km road race, Dash for Cash and a Criterium.
Norman Park, Gordonvale will be capitulated into a fever pitch of activity and the town will take on a Country Fair atmosphere as cottage markets and food stalls set up.
Live entertainment will take place in the pavilion leading up to; during and after the Pyramid Race and various other events are taking place. The entertainment will interest viewers of all ages young and old.
Leading up to the day of the Pyramid Race and Country Fair, many fundraising events take place that encourage the engagement of the local and surrounding communities. All the market stalls are located in a comfortable air-conditioned centre and are one of the largest and most popular markets in the region.

Starting on the 19th August and through to the 23rd August this fun filled five day event will feature exhibitions, displays and activities with a particular focus on the Tyto wetlands precinct, a 120 hectare wetland site located in close proximity to Ingham. The wetland integrates lagoons, interperative signs, lookouts and bird hides. The extensive walking tracks throughout the wetlands will allow visitors the unique opportunity to view wildlife closely without interference or disturbance to the wildlife and their habitat.

The Queensland Orchestra returns to Cairns this year as part of their extensive regional touring program. This extraordinary play reveals the true story behind the ill-fated submarine The Kursk. Compelling from beginning to end, the pressure is extreme and the stakes are high.
The sailors wait helplessly, trapped 80 metres beneath the sea. On the surface their rescuers work frantically. Many have friends trapped on board. Admiral Popov, their leader, is under extreme pressure to succeed at all costs. If he doesn't, there will be a nuclear disaster in the Atlantic.
All the while families and loved ones are desperate for any news. A young woman waits for her sailor, as he writes her love letters while trapped inside The Kursk.

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), 21-23 August 2009, is Australia’s newest art fair and the only one dedicated to offering the best contemporary and traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from Queensland.
Showcasing work from several of Australia’s leading Indigenous art galleries alongside Queensland's Indigenous Art Centres, CIAF welcomes art collectors, dealers, gallerists, first-time buyers and those wanting to immerse themselves in the best Indigenous art from this region.

Dian Darmansjah is the printmaker at Djumbunji Press KickArts Fine Art Printmaking. Dian will deliver a series of printmaking demonstrations at the studio using the intaglio (etching) technique throughout the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

Rusty's Markets have been running for more than 30 years, developed from a humble display of 6 stall holders to one of the largest, most successfull and best known markets in Australia. The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. Everybody has a story to tell, so come and tell yours and contribute to our “Paint your Story” project. No artistic skill required, no tools required, just a desire to express yourself through painting. Local artist Jeni Bullock will be on hand to assist all budding painters. Jeni has a lifetime of experience as an artist and is dedicated to showcasing and encouraging the work of local and emerging artists. The finished canvases will be put on display in our local libraries and Cairns Regional Council building.

The Cooktown Markets happen every Saturday in Charlotte Street.
The Pier Markets, also known as the 'Mud Markets' have an interesting selection of bits and pieces, crafts and arts and live entertainment. They are a good place to hunt down authentic local souveniers and fresh produce directly from the farmers. Every Saturday and Sunday, visit the Pier Marketplace Mall, next to the Marlin Marina and treat yourself with the excellent range of goods on offer for the whole family. And kids will surely enjoy the free face painting and balloons. Everything in an indoor fully air-conditioned space.
The Tully Markets are held in the main street of the town every second and fourth Saturday of the month.
The Mossman Markets are open every Saturday morning, from 7:00am to 12:00pm in the grounds of St. David's Church. It is a very rustic market held under the raintrees, but it is good for fresh produce, plants, home-made preserves, second hand bits and pieces and crafts and souvenirs.
The Yungaburra Markets are the most popular and also the oldest markets in the Atherton Tablelands. Every fourth Saturday of each month, you will have the opportunity to choose your produce among the more than 300 stores, selling organic fruit and vegetebles, jewellery, clothing, crafts and ornaments, tools, poultry, furniture, you name it. Lots of the stores, up to 320, sell products made in the area and from local materials.
If you are feeling hungry, let yourself be tempted by the beautiful aromas of food being cooked. Just opposite the markets grounds, there are plenty of caf?s and restaurants offering a wide selection of food and drinks.
From 7:30am to 12:30 am, enjoy a real North Queensland shopping experience. And bring your kids along with you, they will have a great time playing in the children's centre.
Be aware that if Christmas Eve falls on the fourth Saturday of the month, the Yungaburra Markets will not be held.
Rusty's Markets have been running for more than 30 years, developed from a humble display of 6 stall holders to one of the largest, most successfull and best known markets in Australia. The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. But although the market is widely known for its quality food products, you will also find jewellery, clothing, gem stones, organic personal care products, leatherwear, medicinal herbs and spices, second hand goods and much more.
On Sundays the market becomes 'Rusty's Bazaar' and the range of bric-a-brac and arts and crafts is even greater.
Rusty's Markets were named after the late Emrys 'Rusty' Rees, who was responsible for the development of the market into the superb event that it is nowadays. Save some of your time to enjoy a shopping experience in a carnival like environment.
n 1998 eight young and talented musicians set out on the road to become recording artists. The Saltwater band from Elcho Island off the north east Arnhemland coast set their sights on releasing their debut album. North east Arnhemland already had a strong reputation for producing exceptional musicians and bands such as the legendary Soft Sands band. Soft Sands were probably the first NT band to tour overseas, then came the lead singer of the Warumpi Band George Rrurrambu and of course Yothu Yindi.
Members of the Saltwater band had direct connections with all of those bands with Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, Saltwater’s enigmatic singer/songwriter and guitarist having been a member of Yothu Yindi in the period that the band created their most successful album “Tribal Voice”.
Manuel Dhurrkay and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu are the heart and soul of the Saltwater Band. Manuel and Geoffrey complement each other well with Manuel creating and delivering the more pop orientated songs and Geoffrey re-interpreting and presenting traditional songs of the Gumatj clan in classical ballad format.
The release of the bands first album saw it reach unprecedented heights in sales across Northern Australia it would have made the ARIA charts if those sales were through traditional music stores instead of through the community store and art centres which serve as retail outlets for much of the Indigenous music across Northern Australia. “Gapu Damarrung” set the bench mark for future albums.
In 2004 Saltwater released their second album “Djarridjarri/Blue Flag” again this album created a bench mark for the band it achieved some outstanding reviews and is selling very strongly. “Djarridjarri/Blue Flag” was nominated for an ARIA in the World Music category and won album of the year at the 2004 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and Music Awards in Sydney (The Deadly’s).

World Interplay 2009 will be the biggest and best global festival of young playwrights ever. Offering real opportunities to develop skills, exchange ideas and collaborate with leading international artists, it will attract the hottest emerging theatre writers from around the world. Brought together in Cairns, Australia for two intensive weeks, these writers will be empowered to raise their voices, squeeze their hearts and unleash their intellect in this rigorous theatre-writing event.
“New Voices Now” will be the finale performance of the work of 36 young Australian & International playwrights involved in the World Interplay 09 Festival. Working in groups of 6, the young playwrights will devise a 10 minute play focused on the story of a Cairns local, and these will be performed by local, young actors. “New Voices Now” will be an opportunity to hear 6 untold stories of Cairns through the collaboration of young artists. World Interplay 2009 will be taking place at JUTE Theatre 12 - 23 August 2009 in Cairns, Queensland. With the finale performance to be held at Cairns RSL on Saturday 22nd August.

Venerable Rinchen, from the Khacho Yulo Ling Buddhist Centre of Cairns, along with visiting Monk, Venerable Thupten Lekshe, will first lead the group on a walking meditation under the rainforest canopy at Cairns Botanic Gardens on Sunday morning, the 23rd.

Between 30 and 40, some of them undercover, stalls offer local produce, arts and crafts and trash and treasure. You may have the opportunity to see fun and entertaining buskers and find a really good bargain in one of the second hand shops located only a short walk from the market. The markets are located in the Railway Station, Grigg Street.

UMI Arts Markets – a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island arts, crafts, performance, dance, music and food.The UMI Arts Markets primarily showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture and are presented in collaboration with the Cairns Esplanade, Cairns Regional Council.
Paddocks of Play has been curated by the Cairns Regional Gallery especially for
children and the young at heart.
With a mix of differing media on show such as photography, prints, paintings
and mixed media sculpture, kids will love to explore the themes of farmyard
animals and life on the farm and how this is depicted through art. In addition,
art activities and a storybook space will be available for kids to sit down and
play.
Artists featured in the exhibition are William Robinson, Daniel Mangano, Sandy
Carroll, Robyn Baker, Ed Koumans, Kristin Tennyson, Samuel Tupou,
Ian Waldron, Olga Kaptein and Barbara Dover.

TREAT members work voluntarily throughout the year with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service - Restoration Services - Lake Eacham Nursery, rearing trees to rebuild the framework of the tropical rainforests of the Atherton and Evelyn Tablelands. Over the past 20 years, almost a half a million native plants have been propagated and planted. Production involves seed collection and preparation, the rearing of seedlings and the care of the young trees until they are ready to be planted out.
Daffodil Day is run by Cancer Council Queensland and raises money for cancer support services, research and education through the sale of merchandise and fresh daffodils. Support this cause by buying merchandise or daffodils or volunteering your time at a shopping centre stall between 27 and 29 August. The Daffodil is the international symbol of hope.

The Mareeba Multicultural Festival will be on 29th August 2009. The program starts at 10 am with a parade, followed by non-stop entertainment including Aboriginal, Torres Strait, PNG, Filipino, Italian, Spanish, Albanian, Greek, Polynesian and Australian performers. Food stalls and craft stalls from a range of cultures, and the perfect weather in Mareeba at this time of the year, make this a day out not to be missed. The program ends at 6pm. Admission is free with a range of donated prizes drawn throughout the day. Winners must be present at the time of the draw.
This is a chance for visitors to attend a major local community event. The Mareeba Shire is home to people from some 64 different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, who have lived in harmony for many years before "Multiculturalism" became popular. The festival highlights this diversity and harmony.
Last year, the Multicultural Festival attracted around 5,000 people who enjoyed a day of entertainment, from more than 30 cultures, in perfect weather.
To potential participants: The Mareeba Multicultural Festival showcases local regional performers who volunteer their time and their skills to celebrate their cultural backgrounds. The focus of the festival is to benefit the local region and so stallholders consist only of non-commercial, not-for-profit local cultural and service groups. The Mareeba Multicultural Festival is a not-for-profit event relying on donations from local and regional businesses and on government funding. We welcome any individuals or groups from the Tablelands Regional Council or wider region wishing to perform or set up a stall.
The 2nd Westcott 120 is happening on the 29th august and 30th august. This year it is going to be bigger , better and tougher with 20 paddlers departing etty bay and arriving at the yorkies knob boating club the following day.
In Jan 2009 Marty Westcott was proud to be awarded the Australia day achievement award from the cassowary coast regional counsel, for his efforts with last years event.
We are asking you for a donation for the heart foundation, as Marty’s father passed away from a heart attack 7 years ago. All donations are tax deductible .

An exciting new band was launched in early 2008. Under the leadership of Ron Muir (a world class distinguished jazz musician) the Cairns Youth Stage Band is providing a unique musical experience for students and adults.
Players of all ages are encouraged to enrol to develop their skill and experience in the fields of jazz and stage band music. As the band grows it is anticipated that a second senior band will be formed.
The Hotshots Big Band draws it's players from Cairns and all Tableland centres. With up to 20 players in the band it is most likely the only non-military, non-television, working big band in the country.
The band provides music for balls and dances; they play for events such as the 'Grey Nomad" gathering, and have performed at sell-out concerts at Brothers Leagues Club in Cairns. In most cases, the expectation is that next year's booking will come from each job they do.
With the same instrumentation as the big bands of the War era the music played covers many styles. Female and male vocals are also a part of the standard repertoire.
Cost is $3 entry, supper included, air-conditioned hall, dance to CDs, off-street parking, raffle and lucky door prizes.

No artistic skill required, no tools required, just a desire to express yourself through painting. Local artist Jeni Bullock will be on hand to assist all budding painters. The finished canvases will be put on display in our local libraries and Cairns Regional Council building.

An array of local songwriters will be showcased over Festival Cairns, when "Cooked in Cairns" is staged at the City Place Hub. "Cooked in Cairns" has grown from local musician Terry Doyle's popular monthly Esplanade singer/songwriter events, held over the last year.
The objective of the monthly event has been to showcase our ever increasing list of talented local songwriters, with up to ten songwriters appearing at each event. The original live music concept has become so popular with the many international and domestic visitors, as well as local families, that there are now forty three original music acts in the increasing network.Music lovers will be treated to a great variety of the regions singer/songwriters during the "cooked in cairns" performances at City Place.
All artists will be vying for an opportunity to contribute to the "Cooked In Cairns" compilation CD. The CD will feature fourteen or more tracks from local songwriters, written about our region. So bring your family and friends along, enjoy the ourtdoor dining and some very talented local musicians.

Homes in the Cairns region will open for Sustainable House Day on Sunday 13th September. Houses will be open to the public between 10am to 4pm, and entry is free. About 170 private homes across Australia will open their doors to the public for this year’s Sustainable House Day. The event gives people the chance to get a real-life look inside houses that have been designed, built or fitted out with sustainability in mind and talk to owners, receiving unbiased advice.
Architects, builders and energy auditors may also be on hand at many of the homes to provide expert tips. Home viewers at this year’s event will be able to see the benefits such as:
• Solar and energy efficiency devises
• Design features for passive ventilation and cooling
• Use of low embodied energy and low chemical building materials
• Water harvesting and recycling
• Permaculture and aquaculture
