"Shark Attack" are a trio of ocean-going, local street entertainers; iconic characters that represent the funky and contemporary, new Festival Cairns 2009 program. They're a secondary branding element for festival, and as such will be popping up to make random guest appearances at various events throughout the 17 day program, prompting one and all to point and shout "Look, it's the Sharks!", as they whiz past you on their scooters.
It's great fun to watch these lively "predators" working the crowd in their humourously menacing way - and as a special treat on Grand Parade night, they're bringing their friends the Clown Fish (below), for some fun and hijinxs along the parade route. Don't miss 'em.
As a special project for the Festival Cairns 2009 program, our team is taking creativity to the streets when it presents “Night Light – Short Films in the City”, a series of local, silent films projected onto existing walls, floors and interesting spaces around Cairns city and its cultural precincts.
All aspiring and established filmmakers, of all ages, were encouraged to take part by producing a short film made specifically for this first time event in the Festival Cairns’ program.
The submissions span all genres, albeit they must take cue from this year’s official theme, ‘Telling Our Stories’, so to ensure that the productions feature a strong local connection in their visual portrayal.
This event is really about telling our unique stories, which could mean either referencing our rich history through the images supplied courtesy of the Cairns Historical Society, or creating vignettes of life in TNQ today. Or a combination of both!
In short, this project will reflect back to us who we are and how we live, in a visually interactive and exciting way. Aside from the theme, the other criteria for entry was that the film be silent, between one and three minutes in duration and that it had never been screened publicly before in its entirety.
The final selection of films will screen on a looped reel, after dark throughout the festival period, and will appear anywhere from the side of a building to a shop front in the CBD. (Watch this space for a map of sitings available nearer to the festival opening).
The streets will come alive to the sound of music, and the twinkling of piano keys, over the Cairns Festival. Whether you are a talented pianist, a budding musician or just someone who enjoys music, “Keys to the City” will give you an opportunity to channel your inner Mozart. A series of pianos will be placed at the Cairns Esplanade, City Place and along Shields Street, and the community is encouraged to come along and play. Each piano will have it’s own story to tell, having been painted by one of a group of emerging artists from throughout our region. The “Keys to the City” is a free program developed by the Cairns Esplanade and supported by Buzz Music, incorporating music, art and community in the city heart
Paddocks of Play is an exhibition with children in mind - featuring art from the Gallery Collection and local artists who share a love for farm animals.
Tickets: Pay ypuon entry, Children under 16 free!
