Paving a new direction in the restaurant and bar experience, Salt House has breathtaking waterfront views across the marina, a plethora of modern Aussie cuisine delicacies and a stunning selection of wines, both by the bottle and from the glass.
A key focus for Salt House is its level of entertainment, with a stage area for soloist and band performances outside the public bar, and a fully self-contained DJ booth behind the central bar.
Salt House brings a metropolitan and international feel to the tropics, and since opening in May, has proven the place to be.
Salt House is located at Marina Point, walk straight down Shields Street, through the Festival Hubs and keep going to the water’s edge (next to The Pier) and you’re there. Open til late (2am Friday & Saturday)
"Shark Attack" are a trio of ocean-going, local street entertainers; iconic characters that represent the funky and contemporary, new Festival Cairns 2009 program. They're a secondary branding element for festival, and as such will be popping up to make random guest appearances at various events throughout the 17 day program, prompting one and all to point and shout "Look, it's the Sharks!", as they whiz past you on their scooters.
It's great fun to watch these lively "predators" working the crowd in their humourously menacing way - and as a special treat on Grand Parade night, they're bringing their friends the Clown Fish (below), for some fun and hijinxs along the parade route. Don't miss 'em.
As a special project for the Festival Cairns 2009 program, our team is taking creativity to the streets when it presents “Night Light – Short Films in the City”, a series of local, silent films projected onto existing walls, floors and interesting spaces around Cairns city and its cultural precincts.
All aspiring and established filmmakers, of all ages, were encouraged to take part by producing a short film made specifically for this first time event in the Festival Cairns’ program.
The submissions span all genres, albeit they must take cue from this year’s official theme, ‘Telling Our Stories’, so to ensure that the productions feature a strong local connection in their visual portrayal.
This event is really about telling our unique stories, which could mean either referencing our rich history through the images supplied courtesy of the Cairns Historical Society, or creating vignettes of life in TNQ today. Or a combination of both!
In short, this project will reflect back to us who we are and how we live, in a visually interactive and exciting way. Aside from the theme, the other criteria for entry was that the film be silent, between one and three minutes in duration and that it had never been screened publicly before in its entirety.
The final selection of films will screen on a looped reel, after dark throughout the festival period, and will appear anywhere from the side of a building to a shop front in the CBD. (Watch this space for a map of sitings available nearer to the festival opening).
The streets will come alive to the sound of music, and the twinkling of piano keys, over the Cairns Festival. Whether you are a talented pianist, a budding musician or just someone who enjoys music, “Keys to the City” will give you an opportunity to channel your inner Mozart. A series of pianos will be placed at the Cairns Esplanade, City Place and along Shields Street, and the community is encouraged to come along and play. Each piano will have it’s own story to tell, having been painted by one of a group of emerging artists from throughout our region. The “Keys to the City” is a free program developed by the Cairns Esplanade and supported by Buzz Music, incorporating music, art and community in the city heart
Paddocks of Play is an exhibition with children in mind - featuring art from the Gallery Collection and local artists who share a love for farm animals.
Tickets: Pay ypuon entry, Children under 16 free!

This exhibition invites audiences to experience Taterine ? the planet that occupies
the imagination of Mitchell Cole. Presented as a mixed-media installation, Trip to
Taterine provides a portrait of Mitchell as a young person who, like many of us,
imagines a place where he is independent and free from everyday limitations.
Taterine, and the notions that underpin it, represents the personal worlds we all
imagine. Children and young people construct alternative worlds regularly, often
realising them in the form of cubby houses and makeshift dwellings. Cardboard
boxes, bed-sheets, and sticky tape become alternate universes, hidden worlds
and private sanctuaries. Taterine is such a place - it perhaps exists nowhere and
everywhere at once.
Through a detailed drawing, Mitchell communicated the various elements that
combine to form his extended reality of Taterine. Artists, Kylie Burke and Liz
Dunn have worked extensively with Mitchell to interpret his vision this place and
present it as an environment that encompasses his ideas while remaining open to
personalised audience associations. Taterine is dark and full of strange inhabitants,
yet simultaneously awash with colour, light and energy ? a realisation of both fear
and happiness.
?Frame by Frame: Asia Pacific Artists on Tour? ? an exhibition of up to fifty photographic
and moving image arts works from Queensland Art Gallery?s Asia Pacific Collection.,
provides the opportunity to experience works by leading contemporary Asian and
Pacific artists, including Ai Weiwei (China), Rashid Rana (Pakistan), Tsuyoshi Ozawa
(Japan), Qin Ga (China), Stephen Page (Australia), and Sima Urale (Samoa/New
Zealand).
The artists featured in ?Frame by Frame? use the mediums of photography and the
moving image to explore issues of history, resemblance and difference, transparency
and illusion as well as national and individual identity. The diverse range of works
included in the exhibition reflected the dynamism of artistic practice and expression
coming out of the region.
Included in the exhibition is Michael Parekowhai?s series, The consolation of philosophy
? ?Piko nei te matenga? 2001, featuring images of funereal flowers coupled with
evocative place names, recalling the historic battlefields of World War One. Intended
as tributes to the Maori battalions who fought on foreign soil, through Parekowhai?s
work the mutual power of both photography and history to trick and conceal is
emphasised with the realisation that the flowers are in fact artificial silk and plastic
replicas of species non-native to New Zealand.
Other works featured include Chinese artist Ai Weiwei?s Dropping a Han dynasty urn
1995; Justine Cooper?s Saved by science 2004 series, created during a residency at
the American Museum of Natural History in New York; Sima Urale?s O Tamaiti 1996,
which provides an insight into Samoan family life; and Stephen Page?s commissioned
performance Kin 2006, a story of an Indigenous Australian family, community and
history.
.

The Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival is an annual event held around early in September. A small meeting in 1959, designed to bring city and country together, has expanded over the years to become one of Australia’s premier Spring horse racing carnivals.
The Carnival, held in the tropical North Queensland city of Cairns, operates over four days of celebrations, focusing around two days of horse racing. It is complemented by a host of social activities, some formal and some very informal. Visitors to Cairns for this event are welcomed to a growing cosmopolitan city, the population of which increases by a few thousand over the Carnival weekend.
The Carnival attracts locals and visitors to the region, particularly southern corporate executives and their guests who are present due to the involvement of our major national corporate Sponsors. Cairns Amateurs has something for everyone – horse racing, fashion, socialising and celebrities. Social events include Members-only and corporate functions over the four days, as well as events and areas for the general public on both race days. The beautiful mild September climate entices large crowds to enjoy the racing and entertainment conducted at the course.
Rusty's Markets have been running for more than 30 years, developed from a humble display of 6 stall holders to one of the largest, most successfull and best known markets in Australia. The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. But although the market is widely known for its quality food products, you will also find jewellery, clothing, gem stones, organic personal care products, leatherwear, medicinal herbs and spices, second hand goods and much more.
On Sundays the market becomes 'Rusty's Bazaar' and the range of bric-a-brac and arts and crafts is even greater.
Rusty's Markets were named after the late Emrys 'Rusty' Rees, who was responsible for the development of the market into the superb event that it is nowadays. Save some of your time to enjoy a shopping experience in a carnival like environment.
You can choose when to visit the Kuranda Markets, also known as the 'Original Markets' as they happen every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. For over 21 years, local craftmen have been displaying from locally grown produce to beautifully handcrafted souvenirs, including unique oil paintings and prints of the region. But there is much more to this market. Wandering around the huge amount of stalls you can find emu oil, jewellery, aboriginal artefacts, hand made clothing and a vast variety of home made food. If you fall in love with any of the souvenirs and want to take it home but you think it is too big to be allowed on a plane, do not panic; the stallholders will ship it home for you. The markets are located at 5 Therwine Street, Kuranda.

All artists will be vying for an opportunity to contribute to the "Cooked In Cairns" compilation CD. The CD will feature fourteen or more tracks from local songwriters, written about our region. Clubbers Guide Spring Tour lands at Gilligans with Sidney Samson!
Hailing from the Netherlands, Sidney Samson has been perfecting his craft in the art of music since the tender of age 7 when he started played the guitar and from then on he knew that music was going to play a big part in his life….. 7 years later at the ripe old age of 14 Sidney’s world was about to change after attending the Dutch DMC world champion mixing comp, he was blown away with what he saw, never before had he seen anything like this and from then on he knew that DJing was the way forward… Goodbye guitar and hello turntables.
From 1995 to 1999, Hip Hop and RnB were Sidney’s focus and it wasn’t until he became resident at the biggest club in Holland “The Matrixx” that his love turned from Hip Hop to House and from then on Sidney was hooked, house was defiantly the route he wanted to go down…. 5 years later in 2003 saw Sidney’s first production be released “Its All Funked Up” which was on high rotation by a number of world class DJs and from then there was no stopping him, he was a studio junkie and went on to record dancefloor hits such as ‘Nobody Move’ ‘Rock This’ ‘Girls’ and ‘Aeroplane’
In 2007, after a few successful collaborations with Gregor Salto, he and Gregor decided to start a new record label named Samsobeats who’s releases have included the big summer hit ‘You Don’t Love Me’ which saw Sidney team up with the Skitzofrenix
2009 has saw Sidney release the biggest dance hit of the year ‘Riverside’ which has propelled Sidney into superstardom and he wont be stopping there as there is an album on the way which has some great collaborations on it.
With a keen eye for the best in the business, Ministry of Sound Australia were quick to scoop up Mr Samson to mix one disc of the next instalment of Clubbers Guide series ‘Clubbers Guide To Spring 2009’ due for release later this year.

The Great Tropical Jazz Party (www.magneticislandjazz.org), now in its 13th year is an annual festival of cool jazz beneath the palms on tropical Magnetic Island, just 20 minutes by ferry from Townsville in north Queensland.
Commencing on Friday 11 Sep 2009, the GTJP features highly acclaimed international, national and north Queensland jazz musicians. The festival programme includes three nights and two days of jazz, culminating in an informal Jam Session on the Sunday night. Held amidst the lush tropical gardens of the All Seasons Magnetic Island (formerly the Magnetic International Resort), the stage is set poolside, creating a relaxed, intimate venue that attracts jazz lovers from all over Australia.
The festival follows on from Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week, with many crews lingering on the island to relax after a week of competitive sailing.
The GTJP has earned an impeccable reputation since its inception in 1999 for offering top class entertainment in a relaxed setting, becoming one of Australia’s premier jazz events. Festival Director Marilyn Sheather says, “Every Jazz Party seems to be bigger and better than the one before. We’re able to attract quality musicians simply because the musicians love to play on Magnetic Island. The festival is unique in that all sessions are held at the one venue, enabling musicians who are between sets to sit back and enjoy the music of their peers.”
“Last year’s headliners, Chris McNulty and Paul Bollenback, travelled all the way from New York, and were blown away by the venue and the surroundings,” Sheather enthuses.
“Many musicians bring their partners and families as well. It’s such an intimate, tropical setting that encourages families to linger and enjoy the balmy nights and warm days of Magnetic Island.”
The 2009 programme features eight bands and almost 40 leading international, interstate and local musicians, playing exciting Jazz styles from mainstream to contemporary.
Weekend passes cost $60, which allows admittance to all five day and night sessions. Single session tickets are also available.
Event dates: Friday 11 September 2009 to Sunday 13 September 2009

THE FOUR DIVAS are here, and Opera will never be the same again!
Paradise Concerts is thrilled to take concert audiences to the Opera, in true International style. THE FOUR DIVAS features 2 of the classiest (and beautiful) international singers ever to hit the High Cs, English/Canadian Soprano Joy Power Cleary and Greek Mezzo Soprano Katerini Manolatos, and introduces world-renowned London International prize winning stunning pianist Ambre Hammond to our starry concert stage. This is a triumphant concert for Ambre, as she was originally born in Cairns in 1977, taught by her mother from age 3, and now in the midst of a glittering solo career, having recently performed a world premiere Concerto for Jazz Trumpet, Piano and Orchestra in the Sydney Opera House with jazz trumpeter James Morrison, Ambre jubilantly returns to perform with Paradise Concerts! Add the sparkle of violinist Kirtley Leigh Paine, and champagne is in order to toast this DIVine musical combination of sheer Diva-esque proportion!
In a concert filled with exuberance, joy, flair and flamboyance, THE FOUR DIVAS will perform for the first time in concert together in Cairns. Opera lovers will be truly satisfied, as many famous and well-loved arias in a selection of vocal solos and duets will be performed, by such composers as Massenet, Delibes and Rossini, including the Habanera from Carmen, and the Flower Duet from Lakme. As an added treat, International piano sensation Ambre will also perform some piano acrobatics in a selection of bravura keyboard favourites. Violinist Kirtley Leigh Paine completes this stellar diva quartet and provides the "orchestra" at the Opera, (even if she refuses to be banished to the more traditional "Pit"- ) as well as indulging in her own virtuoso gymnastic violin showpieces.
Acts I and II at the FOUR DIVAS show are bursting with music to stir all the emotions, and a very special Grand Finale will set hearts ablaze with the sheer talent and energy - not to mention passion and intrigue - created by these
FOUR DIVAS!
A CONCERT SPECTACULAR NOT TO BE MISSED

This latest exhibition by Helen Hume is inspired by her four years travelling throughout
the magical landscape known as the Australian Outback. Hume?s travels provided the
perfect opportunity to observe and deconstruct the landscape, creating an awareness
of the tremendous areas of space on the horizon that opposes the intricate forms at
ground level. In Heaven Kissing, Hume has experimented with differing perspectives,
distorting imagery from photographs and sketches, helping them work in unison with
one another. Her works aim to take on a wide aerial view while highlighting pockets of
detail by introducing human and animal relationship to the land.
Each work encapsulates a melee of splashes and strokes that are built upon with glazing
techniques. The two-dimensional works are complemented with a selection of sculptural
forms.
This exhibition is a tribute to Hume?s extensive activity within the arts. Helen?s active
career since 1978 spans the professions of artist, arts worker and art educator, with
group and solo exhibitions throughout Queensland and New South Wales and an
international show in Jamaica. Helen has since retired from teaching, enabling her to
become a full-time practicing artist and freeing her to ponder and explore the unique
Australian landscape.

Heading to Australia as very special guest on Beyoncé's BIG selling arena tour, FLO RIDA, one of the most successful rappers America has produced, has agreed to perform at a very limited series of headline shows this September.
Riding high on the release of his sophomore album, the ARIA Top 10 success R.O.O.T.S. (Route Of Overcoming The Struggle), Flo Rida brings his electric live show to headline venues for one night only including Brothers World of Entertainment in Cairns, as the only regional venue in Australia able to secure a performance.
Born Tramar Dillard, 29-year-old Flo Rida was raised in one of the roughest neighbourhoods in Miami - Carol City. After many years struggling for recognition in the underground scene, in 2007 Flo Rida was signed by Poe Boy Entertainment, and in 2008 through a deal with Atlantic Records his debut release broke Flo Rida out of the club scene and into the national spotlight.
It was the debut album Mail On Sunday which brought the deserved reward of success. It features the double Platinum, Grammy nominated, number one hit ‘Low featuring T-Pain', plus tracks ‘Elevator featuring Timbaland' and ‘In The Ayre featuring Will.I.Am.'
Already Flo Rida's recent offering R.O.O.T.S. has brought further recognition and success. Sampling Dead Or Alive's classic You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), the lead single ‘Right Round featuring Ke$ha' earned the number one spot Stateside and locally. Lodged at the top of the ARIA charts for 5 weeks, the single has exceeded Platinum status.
In addition to Right Round breaking the record for the fastest million-selling digital track in history, it shattered the all-time one-week digital single sales record beating the previous record, his own debut Low.
Don't miss your chance to get down with one of the most versatile, genre jumping music mavericks to top the charts this year

The genesis of this work grew from a visual diary about my adopted home
of Holloways Beach. Nets and fishing and tangles have long been part of my
symbology. Nets of all descriptions provide metaphors for the rich web of
relationships in this community.
I believe connections and disconnections of individuals is one of the central
questions of human life. In this work I link this question to place. Deep
attachment to place is well recognised among indigenous people. They know
that maintaining link to family and country is vital to the soul. As westerners
we have largely lost this link. The migrant experience further severs the
connection. When returning to the land of my birth I cannot deny the feeling
of comfort and affinity. I understand the language, the customs, the humour,
but most importantly I feel a deep emotional connection to the place that is
hard to explain. There are many stories of people returning to the land of their
forebears and being deeply moved, even though they may have been born in
Australia
At the same time I have become aware of entanglement which is part of the
discourse of Quantum Physics. The story of Entanglement is incomplete, but I
believe that this development will, in time, show that feelings such as connection
to place have a physical, rather than a purely spiritual or emotional substance.

Claude VonStroke
What started as a fake name and small booking at a friend’s birthday party has spiraled into an international DJ career for Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw.) One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with “Claude VonStroke.” It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer.
Raised in the suburbs Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojo’s Midnight Funk Association on local radio. At age 16, after mastering the small 4-track recorder used at his high school, Barclay and good friend Jamie Osborne looked through the phone book and visited Juan Atkin’s fledgling Metroplex recordings. They tried unsuccessfully to convince Atkins to hire them as sound engineers and music producers. Little did they know, Mr. Atkins would soon go on to become the godfather of techno.
After University in New York and a 4 diversion in Hollywood working as an assistant on a series of big budget feature films, Barclay moved back to Detroit and re-discovered his passion for electronic music. He was initially inspired by listening to drum n’ bass mix tapes from the UK. He built a massive live rig of synthesizers and samplers and played live at local Poor Boy underground warehouse parties until he lost all of his music in an electrical outage.
One year later, Barclay re-located to San Francisco and decided to merge his passion for music and film by releasing Intellect, a six hour DVD package, self-directed and produced, covering the worldwide electronic music scene and including interviews with over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Dubfire, and Theo Parrish. The main goal of the “Intellect” project was to make an informative DVD that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw taking lessons from his own DVD by starting a record label called “dirtybird” and a production career under the name Claude VonStroke.
Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American tech funk label and has released over 20 EPs. Claude VonStroke’s very first record, “Deep Throat,” was a major hit of 2005. The success of the single was followed up by “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?,” another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the “best track of 2006” in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full-length debut album, “Beware of the Bird” to outstanding reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the underground. Since then, he has recorded over 25 remixes for a range of commercial and underground artists from Indy rock group “The Rapture” to Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson. In an effort to give something back to the community Claude unveiled a deeper techno label called “mothership” in 2007. A large percentage of the label’s proceeds go to a music school for children in Claude’s hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This label features a more euro flavor featuring groups like Catz ‘n Dogz, Italoboyz Maetrik and Voodeux.
Claude has also headlined almost every major club, festival and basement after-party in the world from Fabric to Panorama Bar to D’Edge. The outdoor dirtybird parties in San Francisco’s scenic Golden Gate Park have also become a legendary summer destination point for both locals and international travelers.
A VonStroke DJ set is based on meticulous track selection and outrageous risk taking. He always takes time to find the special ass-wiggling cuts that keep the dance-floor percolating. In 2009, Claude is very excited to be mixing Fabric 46. He will also return to the studio and release his 2nd artist album later this year.

With a massive ongoing refurbishment, Shenannigans Cairns is getting ready to cement its reputation on the local musical stage… With concerns bandied around Far North Queensland about the lack of live music venues, especially after the shock closure of Johno’s Blues Bar, Shenannigans (aka Shags) has undergone a ‘musical renovation’ to establish itself as the next up-and-coming premier live music venue in the North.
Providing an outlet for independent original music that was embraced by both the venue and the community. With these ideals in mind, Shags now plays host to two themed events that aim to generate exposure for fledgling up-and-coming musicians.

The Mental Health Week Art ad Pottery Exhibition is an annual event at the Tanks Arts Centre, organised through the Mental Health Resource Service.
The Mental Health Week Art Exhibition was first held in 2001 at the Tanks Arts Centre. The exhibited works of art are the result of a series of art workshops conducted by seasoned Cairns artsworker, Julie Hayson with mental health consumers (people who experience a mental illness) at the Mental Health Resource Service. The exhibited pottery is produced by mental health consumers attending a pottery group at the Potters Club under the tuition of Ray and Wendy. The pottery group is organised through BAWU, the day program of Cairns Integrated Mental Health Service. The art workshops and pottery group has been an invaluable, empowering tool for the people to express emotions, discover creativity and furthers their opportunity for recovery. It is a process that emphasises ability not disability, and creates inclusion for people who are often stigmatised due to lack of understanding of mental health and mental illness.
