The markets run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, with 180 stallholders selling flowers, delicatessen goods, and a wide array of quality fruit and vegetables that come directly from the growers. Providing an outlet for independent original music that was embraced by both the venue and the community. With these ideals in mind, Shags now plays host to two themed events that aim to generate exposure for fledgling up-and-coming musicians.

It is not every day the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon will "Glo Pink". That, however, is exactly what will happen on the evening of Saturday, October 3. Pink-tober, as it is known, is internationally recognised as the Breast Cancer month.
Join in on the fun cocktail party with special guests. Wear PINK, real men wear pink, so do the ladies.
Words by Bronwyn Voyce:
The Estee Lauder Companies Global Illumination officially launches teh Pink ribbon month by putting the spotlight on breast cancer awareness by illuminating buildings, monuments and landmarks around the world in a blaze of pink light.
2009 is the 10th anniversary of Global Illumination and the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon will literally glow pink to mark this significant milestone.
The Lagoon illumination is one of over 200 landmarks and monuments around the world that will be illuminated pink and joins the likes of Sydney Opera House and Federation Square in Melbourne. While past illuminations have included the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Cairns will offer the first underwater lagoon illumination and can only be compared to past water illuminations such as Niagra Falls.
Restaurants and businesses along the Cairns Esplanade will be encourage to also "Glo Pink" on the same evening by dressing up their premises and staff in pink and helping to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. Everyone is invited to the Cairns Esplanade to witness the pink lagoon and join in the theme by dressing in pink.
To kick off the campaign the Hilton Cairns will also host a cocktail event from 7pm sharp to 9pm on Saturday October 3. This promises to be a fun filled evening with a mystery MC, glamorous entertainment, delicious Hilton cuisine, refreshments and dozens of wonderful local prizes to be auctioned and raffled off - all for a very worthy cause, to promote awareness of breast cancer and to help raise funds to support research

Some album titles need explaining. This isn’t one of them.
'Confetti fell out of my mouth, the word just literally came out of nowhere', reflects LITTLE BIRDY's singer/songwriter/guitarist, 25-year-old Katy Steele. It was a happy accident because the title perfectly captures the ying/yang, bittersweet feelings that inspired this special album.
'Confetti' the highly acclaimed new album from LITTLE BIRDY was the country’s #1 Australian album upon release and it debuted at #6 on the national ARIA chart. Since its release in May the album has spent three consecutive weeks in the Top 10 and is soon to reach GOLD sales status.
The band recently showcased songs from their new album on a national sold out tour, receivingrave reviews in every town on the run.
'Confetti' is a collection of classic-sounding tracks that sound like Dusty Springfield has been teleported from her Memphis heyday into modern-day Melbourne…and she's brought Burt Bacharach and Midlake along for the ride. Written during a rollercoaster year of old endings and new beginnings, it's no wonder that so many of the songs seem to look into the rearview mirror and out the windscreen all at the same time.

Join guest Speaker Anne Gately FAIM as she discusses strategies for the resilient manager to cope with the continual change encountered in the workplace. Most particularly, through robust conversations with resilient managers having to be able to communicate thoughts and feelings accurately to those with whom he or she works, every day in myriad situations.
We succeed or fail at work and in all other aspects of our lives one conversation at a time, according to Susan Scott's seminal work Fierce Conversations . Conversations can be to resolve issues with the team, to provide more-effective coaching in one-to-one conversations, to improve delegation, and to confront issues that impede enriched relationships. As with any skill, the ability to engage in conversation with senior executives, peers and colleagues takes practice and discipline to ensure that organisational and personal goals are met and that the individual manager's skills at initiating, conducting and concluding conversations are honed to a point of expertise.
Successful management practice demands an ability to observe the effects of change, to reflect on the meaning for self and others, to describe and clarify issues, and to resolve apparent tension or conflict.

Australia's best-known international mountain bike race, the Crocodile Trophy has established a reputation as the longest, hottest and hardest off-road cycling event on the planet.
The race attracts a field of professionals and amateurs from all over the world, including legends of cycling, to test themselves against the demands that only the Outback of Tropical North Queensland can offer.
A race of contrasts, The Trophy takes riders from the beautiful World Heritage Listed rainforest of the Tropical Tableland, to the dusty, endless red dust of the Australian Outback within the space of one day's ride. Some come to win, most finish the race just happy to have survived. The glory is in grasping the ""saltie"" at the race finish in beautiful Cape Tribulation. The Crocodile Trophy is awarded to every rider brave enough to finish this ultimate survival test.
The Crocodile Trophy is a ten-day international off-road cycling stage race. In 2009 the event is scheduled to start in the city of Cairns (Cairns Esplanade). The ten stages will take the race across the Tropical Tableland and then via Outback Chillagoe to the Laura region of Cape York. The race stops in Cooktown, before finishing where the rainforest meets the reef at Cape Tribulation. See the event website for details of where each stage starts and finishes.
Entry for spectators at the Crocodile Trophy is free-of-charge. There is no shortage of magnificent locations along the 1,300 kilometres of the race route, to catch a glimpse of the riders as they roll past, caked in dust and sweat. Riders interested in entering the Crocodile Trophy should go to the event website for details on how to register riders and teams.

The word “Doppelgänger” is a German loanword deriving from doppel (double) and ganger (goer). It translates as the ghostly double of a living person; a sinister form of bilocation. In the vernacular, “doppelgänger” has come to refer to any double or look-a-like of a person; or the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection. Doppelgängers are generally regarded as harbingers of bad luck. In some traditions, a doppelgänger seen by a person’s friends or relatives portends illness or danger, while seeing one’s own doppelganger is an omen of death.
For this exhibition, Alexander Maciver has brought together work from international filmmakers and artists in a collaborative study of abnormalities in the perception and expression of reality. Inspired by the works and readings of Carl Gustav Jung, these emerging artists explore the commonplace madnesses of the creative mind in a quest for insight into the dichotomous nature of mental health and illness.

"Its embarrassing, horrifying and hilarious" Craig Platt, The Age Online 2007
The Needle And The Damage Done is a joyous romp through a top ten of the worst music ever released in the history of the world, from someone who's been collecting bad vinyl since she was old enough to shoplift a Rolf Harris record. Since selling out at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, stand-up comic and DJ Fiona Scott-Norman has performed Needle at The Sydney Opera House, won a Green Room Award, and appeared on ABC's tv's The Collectors.
Part slide-show, part show and tell, part cabaret, part stand-up, and directed by Comedy Inc's Paul McCarthy, The Needle And The Damage Done takes audiences on an hysterical journey through the appalling musical excesses of William Shatner, VFL footballers, christians, Bernard King, white supremacists, Torville and Dean, racists, and John Laws.

Tanks proudly presents the return of Jeff Lang with the launch of his spectral, guitar-centred and sonically transcendents new album – Chimeradour – touring nationally with extra special guest, sultry Canadian chanteuse , Jill Barber (with band) from Canada.
Lang has absorbed and transformed many rich influences for this impressive new album, including his recent collaborations with African musicians; the echoes of African desert blues reverberate in his rolling, hypnotic lap slide guitar work, whilst the driving guitar rock instrumental sections suggest the ragged glory of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. As always, the blues is present in Lang's music, tempered with expansive jazz modalities, intricate acoustic guitar picking and atmospherics. One of Australia's finest exports, an evening with Jeff Lang is always a memorable and sublime experience.

After a sell-out Melbourne International Comedy Festival run Mick Molloy, Glenn Robbins and Jeff Stilson are taking their hilarious show on the road! After years of TV, film and radio appearances, the three comedians have gone back to their roots - standing behind a microphone in front of a roomful of punters. Three men, a microphone and 90 minutes of some of Australia's best comedy.
Logie nominated Glenn Robbins has been acting and writing in comedy for well over 20 years. When he takes the stage you'll see a new side of the man best known for his time on The Comedy Company, Fast Forward, The Panel, Kath and Kim and most recently Out of the Question on Channel 7. Hosting the evening, Robbins will introduce two very different stand-up acts.
The enigmatic Mick Molloy is one of Australia's most successful and well-known comedians, often wearing the writer, actor and producer hat as well. Having been part of Martin/Molloy, The Late Show, Crackerjack and most recently Channel 10's Before the Game Mick will engage the audience with his witty banter and topical dissection of news.
Joining the familiar Robbins and Molloy on stage is international sensation Jeff Stilson. Familiar to local audiences through his many appearances on The Panel, Stilson has been nominated for 14 Emmy Awards (winning two) for comedy writing and producing and his twenty year stand up career has included regular appearances on Letterman, Conan and Jay Leno. Stilson brings a dry US wit to the stage with his stories of family, life and living in Australia.

The Giants of Classical Music all together for one magical moonlit evening - Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, set against the backdrop of a full moon and the lush sounds of tropical rainforest surroundings.
These three iconic composers - pinnacles of the classics - will be featured in a programme of the very best of their Chamber Music that carries the listener to a bygone world where time passed more slowly and indulgence in the fine music was norm. Performances of their eras came to life in a colourful range of venues from sacred church cloisters to Duke's palaces, elegant society drawing rooms, and even Bohemian studios. The romance and grandeur of these masterpieces is eternal and to hear these three particular works in a single concert is a journey to cherish.
