A perfect storm of conditions – hot, wet weather to maximise mosquito populations, a typhoid Mary imported case that allowed the outbreak to grow unnoticed, and an unusually quick strain of dengue that spread with lightning speed – came together in late 2008 to create the largest epidemic of dengue Australia has seen since the 1950s.
North Queensland has a long history of dengue outbreaks. The first clinical description of dengue haemorrhagic fever was made during a dengue outbreak in Charters Towers in 1897. Not to be outshone by influenza, dengue has been quietly going about with its own pandemic since the 1990s, with cases escalating from about 100,000 cases in the 1970s to well over a million in the current decade. Last year’s epidemic of dengue-3 virus in the Cairns region was the worst in recent history, and highlights the worrying capacity of dengue viruses to evolve to new, more virulent strains.
In his lecture, Professor Ritchie will describe this event and discuss ways that researchers at James Cook University are working to eliminate the risk of dengue outbreaks altogether.
