HOME - Craig Walsh

Arts & Culture

In June 2010 Craig Walsh set up shop in the Cairns ARI Crate59, and asked the community to get involved in the construction of the collaborative screen for the Cairns installment of the HOME project. Cairns locals and visitors dropped by Crate59 to contribute materials and get involved in the making of a large-scale screen. Items donated relating to what ‘a sense of home is’, constructed a screen specifically for the project. The completed screen will be hung and large-scale videos of people discussing what home means to them will be projected onto its surface in Gallery 2 at KickArts in 2011. Craig Walsh: Digital Odyssey, A Museum of Contemporary Art Touring Project is a two-year tour and artist residency, which brings internationally regarded Australian artist Craig Walsh's distinctive artwork to locations throughout the country. For this innovative and ambitious project, Walsh is travelling around Australia developing and presenting temporary or semi-permanent large-scale public projection works that are responsive to regional history, local stories and the surrounding landscape.

Heart Felt

Arts & Culture

Sangit is a felt maker and artist and Heart Felt is a collection of wet-felted pictures, wall hangings and sculptures. The brilliant colours and rich textures of her work with merino wool and silk expresses the joy and intensity that is possible in day-to-day life once you connect with deeper levels of yourself, the levels where love and creativity reside.

As well as artwork Sangit creates a lot of 'wearable art' like nuno-scarves, hats, vests, jackets and bags.

“I have always loved to express myself through painting and drawing and now I have found my ultimate medium: painting with dyed wool that I can not only see but also touch, the tactile aspect of felting has changed my whole approach to art and life, actually. To be able to be around colours and the softness of wool & silk all day long as I am working - its a blessing, indeed!”

OPENING NIGHT FRI 11 February 2011 5.30pm - 8.30pm – Free, All welcome.
Please join us at Cell Art Space, 109 Lake St at 5.30pm sharp to officially launch Heart Felt. From 6pm - 8.30pm meet the artist and enjoy food and drinks at Twelve Bar Café, Cnr Lake & Shields St.

Women in the Arts

Arts & Culture

The 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day is being celebrated with a dynamic display of new work by local women artists. The ‘Women in the Arts’ exhibition opens at c1907 Contemporary Artspace, on Tuesday 8th March, marking the day of world-wide celebration.
Women in countries across the globe are participating in similar events celebrating women’s achievements and contribution within their communities.
This exhibition highlights the diversity of talent amongst women in the local region. The show features both established and emerging women artists in the Cairns contemporary art scene. ‘Women who have been involved in the arts for a life-time will be shown alongside up-coming local talent. The arts community in Cairns is strong and this event is a chance to see artists at all stages of their career, who have come together to participate in this celebratory show,’ explains curator, Louisa Ennis-Thomas.
‘Artists have been invited to produce a work which highlights their individual approach to creating art. It is an opportunity to showcase their skills and to explore their medium of choice’. Traditional techniques such as painting, drawing and sculpture will be shown with more contemporary mediums such as digital media, sculptural assemblage and works with innovative materials.
‘Women in the Arts’ will be on display until Saturday 26th March.

The Black Pram Project

Arts & Culture

The Black Pram Project is a collaborative exhibition of installations, digital and mixed media works, which considers and probes perspectives on and understandings of childhood and children’s lives and place in modern society. This exploration gives rise to particular complexities such as familial contexts and sensitivities, but also to the darker, less rosy side of the world of children. KickArts is proud to be working in partnership with established local artists Robyn Baker, Barbara Dover and Anna Holan in the presentation of The Black Pram Project. Robyn, Barbara and Anna are well respected, leading artists of Far North Queensland. They have contributed to the growth of contemporary art in the region for many years as practicing artists.

Micheline Van Hautem: La Musique of Jacques Brel

Arts & Culture

For the first performance of her Australian Tour, critically acclaimed Belgian chanteuse Micheline Van Hautem will dazzle Cairns for one night only.

Playing to packed houses at Edinburgh Festival (where she won a prestigious Herald Angel Award), Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and throughout Europe, Micheline is renowned for her spellbinding stage presence and emotional expression.

Micheline has forged a remarkable career singing the music of Jacques Brel, one of the 20th Century's greatest chanteurs, who channelled the light and dark of the human soul. In 2009 Micheline completed a 60-date European tour with Brel's nephew, Bruno Brel.

For this one-off Cairns concert Micheline will be joined by Erwin van Ligten on guitar as she brings to life her Brel favourites, including Ne Me Quitte Pas, The Port of Amsterdam, Seasons in the Sun, Mathilde, Marieke and Bruxelles among others.

Behold the livid, sensual force of Micheline as she inhabits the poetry and passion of Jacques Brel, singing in French, Flemish and English.

"If the key to Cabaret is engaging with the audience, then Belgian singer Micheline Van Hautem has perfected the art…. A performer with the ability to grab hold of audiences and transport them to another world" The Adelaide Review

"Her voice, by turns caressing and corrupting, unadorned by tricks, sometimes even dispensing with the microphone altogether, evokes in the listener that kind of euphoria which comes from being in the presence of someone completely in command of their material, idiom and instrument. ….She is, simply, fabulous."
