Carly Whouley was born and bred in Cairns, and obtained a Bachelor of Film and Television Production from Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art in 2002.
“Our landscape is grand and beautiful and saturated with enough textbook aesthetics to make any fanny pack-wearing tourist wee their cargo pants. Alas, so much goes unnoticed - the diminutive, modest, concealed quarters that form the underscore to this magnificently large-scale production. This is the Cairns that my grandparents, parents, siblings, friends and I know so well.”

A comedy about four women who reunite at a Melbourne Cup party in Cairns – and you are invited! Watch as the champagne flows, the 80s songs come out and hilarious realities are exposed.
Bec ’s once perfect life is racing out of control; her aging mother has taken to appearing naked in public, her estranged husband has shacked up with his ‘girlfriend’ in their luxury home and Bec has moved into a besser block shoebox. To top it all off she is turning forty on Melbourne Cup Day. When a mysterious package arrives, Bec is compelled to hold a birthday party, inviting a group of friends from her past. Bec themes the party around their mothers’ famous Melbourne Cup lunch events back in the 70s. We watch as the four women gallop into their pasts, revealing untold truths that rewrite history.
Told through witty dialogue, songs, a 70s ‘baby-boomer’ aesthetic and with ‘the race that stops the nation’ as a backdrop, What Are The Odds? explores the relationships between women and how family secrets are held across generations.

Feedback:
"Angela Murphy’s new play is a triumph, not to be missed. It is a comedy with underlying elements of pathos. Ian Lawson’s direction is almost flawless. This play delivers audience satisfaction in spades. The opening night crowd was thoroughly engaged from start to finish. I predict tickets will soon be hard to get." (Reviewer Glyn Davies for Arts Nexus, April 3rd)

Returning to Australia in 2011....Imperial Russian Ballet Company’s “Festival of Russian Ballet”.
The Festival of Russian Ballet features a diverse and stunning programme in three awe-inspiring acts.
Act One – Don Quixote
Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then it has been performed all over the world by Russian and International companies.
Former Bolshoi soloist and head of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, Gediminas Taranda, has taken the four acts of the original ballet with its gradual evolution and transformed it into one impetuous act.
Act Two – Bolero
Bolero is a striking and dramatic ballet. Ravel was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting a large industrial factory. There he noticed the slow regular movement of the assembly lines and the crash of machine and materials. Bolero is regarded as one of the world’s music masterpieces.
Act Three – Highlights from the world’s great ballets including Giselle, Carmen, The Dying Swan and Le Corsaire. Also in Act Three, Gopak and Ne Me Quittes Pas, Can Can Surprise
The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world, thrilling audiences and impressing critics. Richard Mays writing in The Evening Standard wrote:
Ballet virtuosity stuns audience
AN ASTOUNDING and exhilarating three-hour programme brought most ballet fans to their feet last night.
Perhaps the few who remained seated were simply stunned by excess, as this touring ballet treasure trove heaped pleasure upon delight, capping virtuosity with even more outstanding steps, leaps and turns.
