In this modern age medical science has all but eradicated virulent pathogens such as smallpox and tuberculosis. While these diseases have been delegated to a chapter in history we are presented with a new set of health challenges as asthma, hayfever, sinusitis, eczema and variants of swine and bird flu become household names. High density living, increased exposure to toxins, a heavily refined diet and improved sanitisation have changed the way our immune system works. Over the past fifty years the prevalence of allergies has increased to epidemic proportions, with between twenty and thirty per cent of Western populations suffering from one or more allergy symptoms.
Nutrition plays an enormous role in the development and treatment of allergies. Specific deficiencies are just as likely to result in allergies as excesses of inflammatory or trigger foods. Just as some foods will aggravate an allergy others are known to relieve them. Dietary changes that result in even a slight change of body acidity can prevent the activation of the inflammatory cascade that results in allergic symptoms. Many people with digestive upsets or other illness are unaware that they even have allergies, putting the symptoms down to other disease states.
The power that we have as individuals to regulate our immune response to allergies is generally disregarded and yet it can significantly improve the overall health and quality of life for anyone with known, or unknown allergies.
In a jam packed afternoon, Brooke White BHSc (Comp.Medicine), Dip.Nut, Dip.Sp.Th, Dip.R.M will share vital information for those who suffer with allergies and how to relieve them.

Welcome
WE ARE pleased to announce that the 9th Asia Pacific Hospice Conference 2011 will be held in Penang, Malaysia. Since the 1990s, the conference has been held in Singapore, Hongkong, Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, Manila and Perth and over time, it has evolved into the premier hospice conference in the region.
The theme “Palliative Care in Mainstream Medicine” was chosen to emphasise the message that caring is the responsibility of all health professionals looking after those who are sick -- that palliative care is basically just good medical care.
The programme that is being drawn up will address this and at the same time, encourage the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills for its delivery in any setting. We look forward to your participation to promote the integration of palliative care with mainstream medicine in our respective countries.
Selamat Datang (Welcome) to Malaysia to savour what is culturally truly Asia and to our UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town in Penang.

Because you care about your health, you have to know what’s in the food you eat!

Are there harmful additives in my foods?
Are they affecting my family?
If you look at food labels and are confused by all the numbers, make life easier for yourself and come along to Additive Alert presentation to find out:
• Startling facts about the way our foods have changed
• Which food additives are linked to health problems, especially in children
• Where harmful additives are hiding in our every day foods
• How to shop smarter, avoid harmful additives and improve your health.
• Learn how to make a safer, healthier lunchbox.
This workshop will provide you with the information you need to make an informed choice about what you feed yourself and your family.
Our greatest source of happiness comes from how we feel about our personal and work relationships. Yet, at home and at work we often struggle to feel at ease and often become stressed by the actions of others such as our partner or work colleagues.
Instead of trying to change others (or change jobs, partners), why be more effective at creating deeply satisfying relationships? The key to greater ease in our lives is learning to be more authentic and let others simply be!
In this workshop, you will learn how to be at ease in every relationship through developing four simple, yet transformative relationship skills.
What You’ll Learn
How to get your real needs met at home & work
Consistently express yourself without compromise
Learn true heart-to-heart connection & release control

Picnic By the Lagoon, sponsored by KPMG, is an all ability fun day open to the whole community. Come and enjoy jumping castles, putt putt, face painting, sand art, movie tent, crafts activities, live entertainment and affordable food on the west side of the lagoon between 10 and 3 on Saturday 30 July in celebration of National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week. Gold coin donation will provide unlimited access to most activities and will support local kids with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities.
National Tree Day, proudly sponsored by Toyota and co-founded by Olivia Newton-John and Planet Ark, began in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s biggest community tree-planting event. Since then, more than 2 million volunteers have planted over 13 million native trees and shrubs. Planet Ark created National Tree Day to help address important environmental issues such as habitat for native wildlife, biodiversity, local provenance, salinity, erosion and long term carbon offsetting. Trees also provide much needed shade and beauty! You can organise a tree-planting site in your local park or school, at a nearby creek, roadside or bushland area, even in your own backyard!

Returning to Australia in 2011....Imperial Russian Ballet Company’s “Festival of Russian Ballet”.
The Festival of Russian Ballet features a diverse and stunning programme in three awe-inspiring acts.
Act One – Don Quixote
Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then it has been performed all over the world by Russian and International companies.
Former Bolshoi soloist and head of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, Gediminas Taranda, has taken the four acts of the original ballet with its gradual evolution and transformed it into one impetuous act.
Act Two – Bolero
Bolero is a striking and dramatic ballet. Ravel was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting a large industrial factory. There he noticed the slow regular movement of the assembly lines and the crash of machine and materials. Bolero is regarded as one of the world’s music masterpieces.
Act Three – Highlights from the world’s great ballets including Giselle, Carmen, The Dying Swan and Le Corsaire. Also in Act Three, Gopak and Ne Me Quittes Pas, Can Can Surprise
The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world, thrilling audiences and impressing critics. Richard Mays writing in The Evening Standard wrote:
Ballet virtuosity stuns audience
AN ASTOUNDING and exhilarating three-hour programme brought most ballet fans to their feet last night.
Perhaps the few who remained seated were simply stunned by excess, as this touring ballet treasure trove heaped pleasure upon delight, capping virtuosity with even more outstanding steps, leaps and turns.
