The '2012' Exhibition

Arts & Culture

The '2012' Exhibition

The exhibition is collection of works, some collaborative, by established artists, hobbyists and art students; together depicting what has been and what they anticipate is to come in the New Year. The artists draw inspiration from the possibility of the world as we know it coming to an end as predicted in the Mayan Calender. The ‘2012’ Exhibition is a unique exhibition that takes a nostalgic look back into t...he past and a futuristic and perhaps even apocalyptic vision of the future.

This exhibition is important as it gives up-coming art students, established artists and hobbyists a chance to (re)connect to their art and provides an opportunity to exhibit their works to the art world of Cairns and the Far North. Working together are a number of artists and for some this will be their first exhibition.
This exhbition was made possible thanks to Kylie Burke at Kick Arts, Cell Art Space, Youth Arts Queensland and is a part of the 2011 Starburst programme.

OPENING NIGHT, SAT 3rd September, The Buddha Bar, 6pm
So come and enjoy some nibbles and wine and celebrate these fantastic artists; it's free entry and there will be local musicians playing!

Julius Caesar

Theatre

To see the future one must only look to the past. Like many who came before him, and after him, Julius Caesar had the support of the people but the loathing of the players. They conspired. They persuaded. They whispered it was for the good of the country. All they needed to succeed was Brutus. Poor patriotic Brutus. He was like a son to Caesar and a poster boy for the republic. But not even a front-man of such unimpeachable integrity could avert the total and utter disaster their daggers set in motion. Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare's new Associate Artistic Director, takes this momentous piece of Roman history and transports it to the corridors of backroom politics. This time, when Caesar gets the axe, it's the media who roar like an angry mob. This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between our intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from office.

A Festival of Russian Ballet

Arts & Culture

Returning to Australia in 2011....Imperial Russian Ballet Company’s “Festival of Russian Ballet”.
The Festival of Russian Ballet features a diverse and stunning programme in three awe-inspiring acts.

Act One – Don Quixote
Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then it has been performed all over the world by Russian and International companies.
Former Bolshoi soloist and head of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, Gediminas Taranda, has taken the four acts of the original ballet with its gradual evolution and transformed it into one impetuous act.

Act Two – Bolero
Bolero is a striking and dramatic ballet. Ravel was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting a large industrial factory. There he noticed the slow regular movement of the assembly lines and the crash of machine and materials. Bolero is regarded as one of the world’s music masterpieces.

Act Three – Highlights from the world’s great ballets including Giselle, Carmen, The Dying Swan and Le Corsaire. Also in Act Three, Gopak and Ne Me Quittes Pas, Can Can Surprise
The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world, thrilling audiences and impressing critics. Richard Mays writing in The Evening Standard wrote:

Ballet virtuosity stuns audience
AN ASTOUNDING and exhilarating three-hour programme brought most ballet fans to their feet last night.
Perhaps the few who remained seated were simply stunned by excess, as this touring ballet treasure trove heaped pleasure upon delight, capping virtuosity with even more outstanding steps, leaps and turns.
