Lynnette Griffiths & Diann Lui
Ceramic Installation
Lynnette and Diann have spent the last couple of decades putting their energy into the development of art practice in the Torres Strait - particularly on Erub (also known as Darnley Island). They are both passionate about the area and their environment.
Aquarium as Still Life is influenced by their close association with the sea and reef of the Torres Strait. Lynnette and Diann create a natural fantasy environment using woodfired clay from Australia’s most northerly kiln in Erub. This installation subtracts the tropical ‘colour’ as it seeks to closely examine the quality of design, shape and structure through modular forms and historical considerations of the aquarium.
Philip Henry Gosse was the first person to actually use the word ‘aquarium’, opting for this term (replacing ‘vivarium’) in his 1854 book The Aquarium

Returning to Australia in 2011....Imperial Russian Ballet Company’s “Festival of Russian Ballet”.
The Festival of Russian Ballet features a diverse and stunning programme in three awe-inspiring acts.
Act One – Don Quixote
Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then it has been performed all over the world by Russian and International companies.
Former Bolshoi soloist and head of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, Gediminas Taranda, has taken the four acts of the original ballet with its gradual evolution and transformed it into one impetuous act.
Act Two – Bolero
Bolero is a striking and dramatic ballet. Ravel was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting a large industrial factory. There he noticed the slow regular movement of the assembly lines and the crash of machine and materials. Bolero is regarded as one of the world’s music masterpieces.
Act Three – Highlights from the world’s great ballets including Giselle, Carmen, The Dying Swan and Le Corsaire. Also in Act Three, Gopak and Ne Me Quittes Pas, Can Can Surprise
The Imperial Russian Ballet Company have performed this three-hour ballet extravaganza all around the world, thrilling audiences and impressing critics. Richard Mays writing in The Evening Standard wrote:
Ballet virtuosity stuns audience
AN ASTOUNDING and exhilarating three-hour programme brought most ballet fans to their feet last night.
Perhaps the few who remained seated were simply stunned by excess, as this touring ballet treasure trove heaped pleasure upon delight, capping virtuosity with even more outstanding steps, leaps and turns.

To celebrate their 25 years together on Australian television, Margaret and David will also
present at Cairns a special screening of P. J. Hogan’s classic 1994 Queensland comedy, Muriel’s Wedding.
Another special guest at Cairns is iconic country music singer, Chad Morgan, who is hosting
a Q&A after the screening of the Australian documentary I’m Not Dead Yet – the story of Chad’s legendry life of almost 60 years on the road, narrated by Australian rocker Tex Perkins.
Alongside these Australian features is the winner of four Israeli Academy Awards – The Human Resources Manager and Academy Award® nominated animation by Sylvian Chomet (Triplets of Belleville) The Illusionist. The festival line up also includes Official Selections from the Sydney Film Festival; the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Happy Happy; romantic comedy Medianeras, the internationally acclaimed Le Quattro Volte and new documentary from Errol Morris, Tabloid.
