At 6.30pm, following the meeting, is a talk “Fungal Friends and Foes in Your Garden” by fungi expert Barry Muir (copies of Barry’s fungi booklet are available in Friends House).
As we are well into the wet season, fungi are appearing in gardens everywhere. There is an unfortunate tendency to remove or destroy them in the belief they are somehow harmful. The opposite is true, Barry says. Most are very beneficial to gardens and some are even essential. There are a few that damage plants but these are in the minority and easily recognised.
The talk will show photos of many of the common species found in Cairns gardens and talk about their advantages and disadvantages to help you in future gardening.
