“Enhancing Coral Abundance: Larval restoration on degraded reefs” is the title of the talk Katie Chartrand, a research scientist at James Cook University, will give to the Friends of the Botanic Gardens on Wednesday September 11.

Katie’s field is in the ecology and photo-physiology of tropical marine organism in coastal habitats at risk and she is now co-leader of a state and federal government-funded research project to increase coral larvae settlement on the northern Reef.

This includes rearing millions of coral larvae with improved performance and uptake of the symbiotic algae required for coral survival. The team will then settle the larvae directly on affected reef areas.

The talk, to be held in the Gardens visitor centre, starts at 6pm with a light supper.
